Understanding Baby Growth Percentiles
📈 What is a Growth Percentile?
A percentile indicates where your baby's measurement falls compared to other babies of the same age and sex. For example, if your baby is at the 75th percentile for weight, they weigh more than 75% of babies their age.
✅ What's a "Normal" Percentile?
Most healthy babies fall anywhere between the 5th and 95th percentiles. What matters most is consistent growth along YOUR baby's curve, not necessarily where on the chart they fall.
🏛️ WHO Growth Standards
This calculator uses the WHO Child Growth Standards, based on the Multicentre Growth Reference Study (MGRS). These standards describe optimal growth for healthy, breastfed children worldwide.
👨⚕️ When to See a Doctor
Consult your pediatrician if your baby's percentile drops significantly, crosses multiple percentile lines, or falls below the 3rd or above the 97th percentile.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this calculator?
This calculator uses the official WHO Child Growth Standards LMS parameters for accurate percentile calculations. These are the same standards used by pediatricians worldwide. However, for official measurements, always consult your healthcare provider.
Should I be worried if my baby is in a low/high percentile?
Not necessarily. A baby at the 10th percentile isn't "worse" than one at the 90th. What's most important is that your baby follows their own growth curve consistently. Genetics plays a major role – smaller parents often have smaller babies.
Why use WHO growth charts instead of CDC?
WHO charts (used here for 0-24 months) represent how children SHOULD grow under optimal conditions with breastfeeding. CDC charts show how children DO grow (including formula-fed babies). Most pediatricians now recommend WHO charts for children under 2.
What if my baby was born premature?
For premature babies, growth is typically assessed using "corrected age" until age 2. This means you subtract the weeks of prematurity from your baby's actual age. Consult your pediatrician for guidance specific to your preemie's growth tracking.
